Shashka (Шашка) is a cavalry sword. However, I think for parade and dress purposes, other RKKA troops, as well as NKVD carried it also...

A very emotional image and terrific example of the personalization of combat. The studio-like background also gives this a very eerie, lonely feel. Could it be an abandoned home they entered? This is one image that makes me wonder what happened to this fellow named 'Kolya' and then, what happened to his family. An A+ image, Richie.
