While, I wouldn’t treat a helmet in original war time condition in any manner other than treatment for mould, a helmet like this is a little different. If I was going to treat this lid with anything it would be Renaissance Wax. Have a look:

I’ve used this on similar relics with good results. Doesn’t change the colour or add a sheen. Try a bit on some old metal and see what you think.
