re: M40 Luftwaffe relic: should i use acid?
I see no problem with using a plastic bucket. The acid will probably affect a metal bucket and leave it at least looking horrible with the yellow/green salt buildup. At worst it might lift the galvanising off the bucket and cause it to start rusting also. (this stuff is an acid after all).
Don't forget to neutralize the acid before drying the helmet off and even when the helmet is dry, in areas where you have fully removed the rust (and probably the paint too, depending on how hard you scrubbed) that the nice bare metal will start rusting again so some sort of inhibitor like renwax etc is required.

Glenn you mean to brake down it's strength by adding water?

No, the action of the acid causes yellow/green salts to form and so when the soaking and scrubbing is complete you have to give the helmet another soak in a solution of Na2CO3 (Sodium Carbonate) to neutralize those salts. Then you can wash in fresh water and then quickly dry before rust starts again.

Re: M40 Luftwaffe relic: should i use acid?
i have ordered some Sodium Carbonate to stop the smeg build up.. warm soapy water has worked with the rest of the helmets i cleaned except 1 so that need to be soaked to stop the white build up....
