Grave marker is possible, but the rust isnt especially on the top/outside, which I would expect from a grave marker as it would have been outside of the eath to rust for atleast a few years. I hope not, but I can’t be sure about it.
Thank you for the information! Any idea what the word behind: „gefallen" says? I can’t read it.
Edit: I found it out, it probably says: Minen - Mines. So that damage on the helmet is probably what killed him... hopefully a quick death.
Edit2: I rememberd why i know it definitly was not his grave marker, i have a picture of his grave, although it is low quality, its clear there is no helmet on the cross.

As mentioned before the cause of death being Minen can also include mortar fire.
Does not mean that this, wasnt once on his grave. The locals and russian soon used the crosses for firewood and ploughed through the graves.
