If the owner of the album was on the I-31, it would be difficult to get photos of his own sub at sea, maybe the photos were taken onboard the 31 of whatever subs were sailing with it.

Long Shot, you have convinced me. Good graphic comparison. I wonder how/why the sub was misidentified. The postcard photo of the boat's captain is correct ..... oh well, another puzzle.by Long Shot
So doubling back on these submarine photos. Despite the labeling of the photo the submarine in the first photo is clearly not a Type B-1, which the the I-31 was. The gun for the I-31 was in the back ( remember the plane flies off the ramp along the front). The one in the album labeled "I-31" has the gun in the front and no airplane hangar. If anyone doubts these clearly verifiable facts they need their head examined
