Can't clearly see the documents. Probably bank/savings/insurance records. The bag is a "comfort bag."
    Quote by wiki
...Comfort bag (慰問袋, imon-bukuro) was a gift packet prepared by civilians to be sent to Imperial Japanese Military soldiers for the purpose of encouraging them. The bag contains comfort articles (慰問品, imon-hin) not issued by the Japanese Military, such as toiletries, dried fruits, canned foods, and letters of encouragement. Bags were prepared by schoolgirls or local patriotic women's societies. ...
The flag is displayed back-to-front and was presented to a Mr. Hirayama. The bold writing should be along the fly as if the pole was on the right side:

    Inori
    Prayers

    武運長久
    Bu'un Chokyu
Continued luck in the fortunes of war

It is written like this on the flag, read top-to-bottom, right-to-left:
    長武
    久運

    平山勇吉君
    Hirayama Yūkichi-kun
    Mr. Hirayama, Yūkichi

The balance of writing appears to be the signatures of well-wishers.

It looks like you might have a couple of pay booklets in the mix. It would be great to get close up pics of some of the interior pages of those. More often than not, unit ID information is available.

I wasn't sure that was a guntai techo or not. How does it look, Tom?

Thanks, Guy. A true pay booklet, but I can't make out the kanji, unfortunately. Unit ID usually found just below the salary amount on page shown, as well as the first page just inside the front cover. Wartime examples tend to have units coded, although not always the case. Sometimes the unit is named after the commander, which is, unfortunately, the least helpful info.
