These were messages a new recruit in Manchuria sent his parents from boot camp. He was assigned to the former 1st Heavy Field Artillery Regiment, which had been renamed Unit 816 under the Kwantung Army after much of the unit got destroyed in the Nomonhan Incident against Russian tanks in late August 1939.

They were to guard the border between Manchuria and Russia. In WW2, they got re-designated as 垣第６５２３ unit under the 14th Army sent to the Philippines.

The papers use the unit name of 816, so it was still from the time they were guarding the border before WW2.

The first paper is a listing of civilian clothing items he was sending home, after having been issued army clothing.

The third paper says he would soon be assigned to the 816, but details such as company and platoon were not yet clear. He warns his parents that this info was regarded as a military secret.

The second paper says he was doing well at unit 816, but was not allowed to get into details.
