Paybook Translation Help, Please!

This Shingoro Kumagai joined the army on 1st December 1905, right after the Russo-Japanese War. He was an infantryman in the 48th Inft. Rgt.

Of particular note is that he was a 一年志願兵（Based on the German style Einjährig-Freiwilliger system), a one year service volunteer, a program that reduced 3 years of active service to one year. A system that allowed highly educated men special privileges in return for the soldier shouldering part of the national expense. Thus these men had to pay for their meals and lodging, as well as maintenance costs for the equipment issued to them.

This program was cancelled in 1927.
