TAHD2000 asked "If someone knows what war it could be from, please let me know. "
The motif of a captured enemy cannon (actually of US manufacture ) suggests the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95, though the cup inscriptions say nothing about celebrating any victories. Captured cannons took on a symbolic meaning in that war as explained here.
Thanks Nick, i guessed that it could be the 1894-95 war but was unsure.
Interesting that the guns they had taken was so important that they made the medals for that campaign from them. Great link, thanks Nick! :-)
Initially the IJA also planned to have standards for artillery regiments as well, but the idea was dropped as early as 1885, as canons came to have the same symbolism as regimental banners.
Thus since 1885, taking an enemy artillery piece had the same significance as taking the enemy's banner.
I got a new tea cup the other day so when i was fixing in my porcelain cabinet it took a picture of my tea cups. :-)
Great tea cups.
