Here is a cup thats made to look like an Land Mine.
Maybe it tries to look like a type 93 land mine.

    The main kanji are:
    禮儀
    Reigi
    manners; courtesy; etiquette
    Modern Japanese: 礼儀

I can't quite read the last two kanji along the bottom, but it looks like "hospital" to me.

    歩十四病院
    Ho Jū-yon Byōin
    14th Infantry Hospital

If it is "hospital," that would explain, to me at least, the more peaceful message of "Courtesy."

EDIT. The more I look at it ... that kanji looks like [abolition; discontinuance; discontinuation]. Can you post a clear photo of those two kanji?

Thanks Guy for the translation. :-)

I looked at Lawrence:s homepage and he had translated a similar cup with 14th Infantry and the name Arakawa.

Here is a better pic of the smal kanji!

びっくり目 Bikkuri-me! [Surprised Eyes!!] I didn't know about these type of kokeshi.
I don't think anybody uses the kanji for bikkuri: 吃驚, also 喫驚.

Since I'm making corrections, let me do the translation properly:

    歩一四 荒川
    14th Infantry Arakawa
Previously I had translated 14 as 十四 [14]; however on the cup 14 is written as 一四 [one-four]. Same-same, GI!

    Cheers,

Wow ! Thank you so much for the translation !

I really like the style of the first one also note that the second one if reversed share the shape of the type 95 helmet, funny detail but common.

Nice cups, particularly the first! I love that art deco style that can sometimes be found on these. They rarely seem to show up.
