    Surnames in hiragana:

    うつのみや (宇都宮) Utsunomiya
    やまもと (山本) Yamamoto

    I wonder if they are the names of the two soldiers?

    [Edit: AArrrggghhhhh .... it's written in English on the right side of the photo: A. Yamamoto is the photographer; his shop was in Utsunomiya.]
