The pictures show a medal award document for the Green Ribbon Medal of Honor. Dated Meiji 26 [1893]. It was awarded to a fairly famous businessman and politician, Nitta Daihachirou (仁田大八郎). What is uncommon, though, is that on the left side, a very wide margin includes not only an image of Nitta but also his personal red stamp (rather, a facsimile of the same, I imagine). Has anyone ever seen any award document like this? Is it an official document issued by the Decorations Bureau?

NB: This piece is not in my possession. I saw it online.Uncommon medal documentUncommon medal documentUncommon medal document

That can only be a reproduction for displaying at one of his business organizations.

Unlike citations for orders that all read the same, this citation provides a detailed resume of his accomplishments, which has a lot of PR value. If you had this framed in a waiting room, curiosity would have made visitors read about his contributions to society.

Recipients of orders did have replicas made of the citation, if they were wealthy enough. The original stayed at home and a copy got framed for his work office, etc.

Citations are with national stamp and signatures, something that can never be reissued in its original shape even when lost to fire and earthquake. All one could get as replacement was a puny printed notice. Such practices would have thus become common after the 1923 quake, when many people in Tokyo lost their citations to fire.

Even today, a company specializes in making repros of your citations for the reasons above. They now computer scan the original, but printing scans cannot get the colors right. So they spend 2 days at least in tweaking the colors to match the original.

Photo below of citation reproduction in progress.
