Your dog tag belonged to a member of (most likely) either the 4th or the 6th medium mortar battalion (both shared the number 12433), middle column being sub unit (or home des. number) 92, and left column being soldier #61.

Is there any writing on the top badge? It looks like it might have something to do with the Nippon-maru naval training ship.

I was aboard her last summer for about two hours. About once or twice a month they raise her sails; sadly, not while I was there.

The other badge is displayed upside down; it says , harmony/peace.

I also note 上 [top/above] in thin kanji above 和. I'm thinking it is to ensure the pin is attached properly -- it would have been covered over in the now missing enamel.

    Anything on the reverse?

This post is meant for the badge with the ship on it. There is no writing on the top of the ship badge and no writing on the back.
