Question about Italian military headgear

I'm trying to understand the system for identifying units on headgear (visors, bustina, sun helmets) and I haven't had much luck with searching the web. When you see an officer cap with fanteria insigna on it with a number, let's say 61, is the number a regimental number or a division number?

Yes. Generally speaking, service branches (supply, medical) didn't have numerals, while Alpini, bersaglieri, artillery, etc. did.

Ziomanno, am I correct in thinking that the numbers were soon omitted in wartime, for security reasons?

Hi Kohima; actually not, the rgt numbering on headgear insignias was still in use throughout the war.
