    It looks like a beat up early "nickel" one to me - look at the 3rd picture, brass showing through?

    compare with this one...

    Nickel for me too because I never heard about an early buckle made in steel.
    For me steel is a late war material.

    the buckle is a early made most comon nickel silver buckle from Overhoff .

    You don't find this early maker mark on steel buckles !
