I picked up this aluminum-shelled M34 recently, and wanted to get the group’s opinion about it. Does it pass the smell test?

Also, I understand these helmets were made with both steel and aluminum shells. Why was this? Did manufacturers switch to steel at some point to conserve aluminum? Also, is one type of helmet more common than the other? Thanks!

I have seen only aluminium shells for this specific maker. I would say manufacturers choice.
It is a very nice example.

A nice example indeed. These helmets are very common and can often be overlooked as to how unique and special they are. This type of M34 was my first helmet before I understood there was a difference between "Combat" and "Civilian" lids. So this type of helmet will always have a special place Enjoy it and congrats!

Here are 3 of my aluminum civil helmets. The first is the twin of the helmet that started the thread. The second is from the same manufacturer. The third has a different manufacturer's stamp. It may be from the same manufacturer, but a different contract. I am not sure. I have a few others, but don't have access to them now. These pictures were already on the computer. Jim G.
