It’s an M18 shell as denoted by the lack of rivet heads on the lower sides. There were no shells designated M17, only M16/M18, however, a steel liner band was introduced in 1917. Like many WW1 shells, this one was refurbished to 1940 regulations during the war and painted with a dark matte field grey paint with the addition of a single decal and M31 liner. There is a good chance it may also have been used prior to WW2 and between the wars in a variety of capacities including as an early transitional Heer helmet or other branch of the Reich.
Despite the appearance, it looks good and is what a lot of collectors would refer to as salty meaning well used etc. Congratulations, it’s a nice helmet.

The shell is actually an M18. Notice that it lacks the chinstrap lugs.
It's a bit salty but still nice.
Edit: Andy types faster than I. He beat me too it.
