Default M35 overpainted helmet from Ukraine. Liberate decals or not?

    Hi everyone,

What do you think about this helmet. It's a M35 according to the seller a 62 size. I was overpainted. Maybe at the front. The rough brushstrokes are clearly visible. This inside looks like a LW blue. Makes you wonder.

What do you think. Is it worth to 'liberate' the decals or leave them as they are. If I would decide to liberate them what is a save way to do this without damaging the decals. Any ideas??

    Thanks in advance.

    Cheers Paul

    Hi there.

In my opinion you should never try and ‘liberate’ or ‘dig out’ hidden decals.

It definitely looks like field-applied paint, in which case you should leave it as it is. The overpaint is part of the helmet's history, and digging out the decal would only harm it.

As the others have said ... that would be a no no in serious Helmet Collecting. Removing paint. Acid baths. Digging for decals. It a different thing. Also if you did dig ... you'd probably ruin the decals anyway.

don't alter historical items , if you want to see decals buy a helmet with decals. Or look at the forum.

    Hi Denmark,

I got the message loud and clear. Like I stirred up a bees nest. But thx all for the excellent advise.

The thing is that I was not sure if the overpaint was periode applied and not a painted over relic. I think that has been cleared. Still wondering about the blue inside paint. Maybe the lightfall? Maybe re-issued LW helmet? I'll check it out and share it on the forum as the helmet has arrived.

    Cheers Paul
