Would certainly need close photos of the decal to see if it is legit or not. The rest of the helmet ( shell, paint, liner cord & chinstrap ends ) seems good.

It does have a good chance but as Dan said better picture of the decal without glare would help. I know it may not be what you wanted to hear but always lean on the side of caution.

Ok guys I have a question on this M42. I only have these three pictures because it is coming from an estate sale. Judging from the unique shaped vents I would venture to say its a Quist. The paint looks good to me as far as being original and accurate. The one thing that I don't particularly like is the high placement of the LW decal. I have never really seen one placed this high in contrast with the vent.
Let me know what you think
Can't be a Quist , they only produced M42's very late war and without decals.
To me it looks like an NS , the decal placement is never an issue , they stuck them wherever they wished as long as it was below the vent hole.
One close-up is all you need to confirm if this is the correct decal for an NS. It has a chance.

Hi, if the decal is a good one (and I suspect it is) it's placement is fine, it's a touch higher than most, but not an issue. Leon.

Agreed, looks good so far.

Ahh my own ignorance blinds me! Thanks you guys, I am hoping this one is good, starting to really like it.

I too suspect the decal to be good as the overall helmet appears untouched. But only better photos will tell. I think the odds are on your side especially if it is truely from a vets estate, but they are still odds.
(btw...try as I might I find extremely difficult to id helmet makers by shape.)

Agreed Michael. I saw the big doughnut-shaped vents and assumed Quist.
I have now learned that Q didn't put any decals (or at least very few) on M42's
That is very valuable information to me

Have to agree with Frank on his assessment. Can't be a Q - you may never find a Q M42, they are pretty rare, and a decal on a Q M42 would raise a red flag. NS occasionally used the big donut shaped vents on some - not all - of their M40's and M42's I believe. NS is also noted for sometimes odd placement of their Luft decals. I think this one is most likely legit and would be a nice one to own. Good luck!
By the way Aaron, I'm curious what part of Illinois you are from? I live in west central Illinois on the Mississippi River.
Cheers,
