Picked this one up on eBay for a decent price, but it didn't have a chin strap nor a leather (only the pins were left), both were added by me.
Luckily I had a fitting late war pig skin leather piece with Schuberth markings at hand.
The seller comes from near Kleve, Germany and he says the helmet may have come from or participated in the Battle of the Reichswald (Operation Veritable).
I don't think it's far fetched to assume that, it would certainly make sense that this was maybe left behind after the battle or when a platoon surrenered or something.
There's still a few specs of dirt between the shell and liner band so it may have sat around in the weather of spring '45 for a while, maybe on a field after the soldier threw it away..?
Anyway back to the helmet, unfortunately the outside has had some sort of varnish applied which makes it more shiny than it ought to be, but I think it's not too bad.. Might try to remove it though.
The liner is a 1943 Schuberth one and the split pins are unmolested SC (probably 1943) ones.
Couldn't find a dome stamp unfortunately.
Overall I like how it turned out, just the classic M42 helmet pretty much.

    More photos

P.S. I also just realized that there's a bunch of letters in the dome, probably initials, written with a pencil.

    Hi Frank,
Yeah I understand what you mean, and if I had seen it up for sale for an inflated price I probably wouldn't have gotten it.
The leather is original, just the felt strip isn't, and the stitching of course.
I can still remove it if I change my mind.
I'll get some more complete and untouched ones soon enough
Christmas is still ahead after all

I saw the video on YouTube a few hours after it was posted. It's a great helmet!

I decided to have a go at removing the shiny post war lacquer with acetone and it worked extremely well.
The patina wasn't touched at all, not even the bits of clay that popped up after removing the lacquer.
Now it looks a lot better IMO, it also had some strange brown spots in the lacquer which are luckily gone now.
I also took outside photos as the weather finally allowed it.
