I have multiple repaints that go right under the liner, very carefully done. Also - on this forum someone once removed a paintjob of a KM helmet with acetone, only to realise years later it was likely an rather odd colored Km Camouflage. So, if ur unsure, leave it as it is is what i´m saying.

I saw this SE M-35 helmet on GHV listed as a KM Naval facility guard black overpaint reminded me of this M-42.
I still think the M42 black paint is most likely post war but I found this interesting.
Did other branches ever do this and where did they source the paint for these odd KM Painted helmets I wonder?

Unrelated but I now own the helmet in the 1st link posted by Andy in post #2. It is painted with what appears to be a black oil based paint that was mixed with some type of thinner that resulted in a very thin coat of paint. It's 100% original and a great example of a rare heer black helmet
