White camo M35 Probable KIA Helmet !!
This lid was recovered in the Auwere swamp in eastern Estonia hence it's good condition.
The helmet is a slate grey colour but has clearly been White camo with the outline of a decal on the left hand side.
It has taken a bullet impact to the left rear of the skirt whcih had then gone through the liner band and liner and exited from the top of the helmet , blowing out a section of the top , the liner appears to have much dark reddish staining presumably blood. When the lid was found a large part of the top section blown out was recovered about 30 metres away , which fits perfectly with the helmet.
There is must conjecture about many helmets which are shown with Battle damage but how that occured and what was the result on any person wearing it is always open todebate ,however with this one it seems to unfortunately be fairly clear that the end result was a poor one.

What a spine chilling artefact mate! Ugh it's a scary one, but an ever poignant piece from the past, unlucky fella to be wearing that.

What a graphic example of the horror that war really represents! A sobering artefact. Leon.

Any guesses on what the decal was ?

Most likely a HEER decal. Leon.

Personally I do not see how a 30 caliber bullet could cause that much damage especially if some one was wearing the helmet. The bullet will lose much of its initial velocity and penetration power just piercing the shell on entry. Then it has to go through bone and tissue before "exploding" the top of the helmet and fragments flying that far?
I am not doubting the damage or the fact that pieces were found 30 meters away. I find it more possible that no one was wearing the helmet at the time.
But hey...I could be wrong
