Would agree with using renaissance wax, any restoration or remedial work you do with an item should be reversible, the classic museum conservators maxim. If the 1918 ear cut out you have is original then you are doing very well indeed. It is one that eludes me still.

I actually found it in Afghanistan of all places while deployed at a local shop. It looks like there’s some patch work on the top, but I don’t really care, it’s a rare helmet, and a souvenir if nothing else for me.

I know the Afgans used M16 style helmets but not WW2. Possible
