    Anti-Tank Division 7

    The unit started out as Panzerabwehr-Abteilung. On 7 Dec 1943, the unit became Panerjäger-Abteilung 7 and was equipped with Sturmgeschütz III Ausf. G with schürzen (side skirts). It was attached to the 7th Infantry Division.

    The 7th Infantry Division

    Formed on 12 October 1937 in Grafenwöhr for the 7th Infantry Division. After the Installation moved to Munich.

    By order of 11 March 1938, the division was alerted to take part in the invasion of Austria. In March 1938 he crossed the border to Braunau and then advanced to Ried, which on was reached on the evening of 12 March. On 13 March, the division reached the Hausruck in mühevolle Gebirgsmarsch Lambach. On 18 and 19 March, the Division finally their accommodation area west of St. Pölten around the villages Melk, Ybbs and Pöchlarn.

    From 1 September 1939, the they took part in the Polish Campaign. They came across the Jablunka Pass and the Zwardon saddle. This was followed by persecution battles over Dumajec and the conquest by Przemysl.

    On 10 May 1940 they took part in the French campaign Over Leuven and Tournai. The division advanced into the Scheldt section and then took part in the Battle of the Scheldt. The division then crossed the Lys and fought for Lille.

    From 22 June 1941, the division took part in the Russia Field. Above Bialystok advanced the division to Minsk, then to Mogilev and Roslavl. This was followed by the defensive battle of Jelnja, then offensive battles on the Nara and the Advance against Moscow. After the beginning of the Russian winter offensive, the division was formed in the area of Zhelkovka - Dorochovo.
    At the beginning of 1942, The division retreated to the Nara and then to the Gshask position.

    In 1943 The division in the Orel arc and then moved across the Dessna and the Dnieper to Gomel.

    In 1944 followed the retreat through the Pripjet swamps, via Pinsk and Bielsk to the bow. Then the division took part in the battles between Bug and Narew.

    At the beginning of 1945, the division fought in the area of Vlosawa - Wegrow. After defensive battles at Castenburg, rear guard battles between Narew and the lower Vistula via Zichenau - Thorn - Graudenz on Danzig. After the beginning On January 12, 1945, the 7th Infantry Division of the Red Army was designated as the Red Army's Vistula Oder Operation. Infantry Division was pushed into the Great Werder on the Bay of Danzig. Thereby The division had suffered heavy losses. In mid-January 1945, the Division was ordered to build a barrier on the Nogat. 24. In January 1945, the division took over the section. From mid-March 1945, the group was renamed the 7th Infantry Division denoted. On March 15, 1945, sappers of the division blew up the eastern Vistula dams near Rothebude.     A notable member of Panerjäger-Abteilung 7 is Leutnant Johann Straub (6 June 1912 - 12 July 1996). He is proud of his achievement and shows it off via the kill rings on his Geschütz (assault gun). He distinguished himself during the battle against the heavy Soviet offensive in the summer of 1944 and was awarded the Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross) in 12 August 1944. He is the Zugführer (platoon leader) of 2.Kompanie (possibly called Stu.Gesch.Abt.1007) / Panzerjäger-Abteilung 7 (7th Anti-Tank Battalion) / 7.Infanterie-Division. This photo was taken in that summer, between Pinsk and the River Bug.

    Terrific information and great photos. Researching markings on field gear and equipment is one of my favorite parts of the hobby. Great work, and thanks for this.
