Seeking Information about this Buckle

Am guessing this was a post war photo from around 1950. I think integration began around 1948. Here is the whole photo that I had cropped his picture from as well as one of the entire unit. Thanks again to everyone for all the great information. I have also discovered in the family records that Doc was awarded the Purple Heart and 5 Bronze Stars, but do not know the details behind those citations. Is there some way to obtain actual records of those to learn the circumstances behind the awards? The document that I am looking at says that he was in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe (Germany).

Forgive my ignorance guys. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to come across as being racist, but the military was segregated in WWII. How exactly were these two men in the same unit?
