Sorry about the one line response, however I was "on the hoof".
An interesting buckle, maker and of course - that strange M5 mark.
Nothing stupid about your question and in reassurance, it has been asked many times before and many times before, the same answer has been given as - we do not know and why not M4?

Thanks David. It is rather strange that this sole maker decided to use their M5 number on buckles, but then again buckles being part of clothing they probably thought, what the heck...
