"Early" NVA spade
Hi,
A few days ago I was able to buy this "early" entrenching tool from the NVA / Nationale Volksarmee of the former DDR in another forum for a cheap EUR 25 including shipping.
The spade shows signs of use, but it and the carrying device are in fairly good, collectible condition.
This e-tool is still from the "early" production with a welded spade blade.
In the previous model, the spade blade was still riveted.
Later, these spades were gradually replaced by folding spades.
For example:

The spade has various stamps on the blade.
The manufacturer's logo shows a circle with the letters BAT stamped inside it and a bat with outstretched wings underneath.
The number 1 is stamped underneath in a triangle.
This is most likely a grade marking for good quality.

In my opinion, this is the manufacturer's code for the company GUSTAV BARTHEL, DRESDEN
This company is known as a former manufacturer of kerosene lamps and soldering equipment.
The "bat brand" can also be found on old, galvanized watering cans and is supposedly found on wheelbarrows from the 80s.
I couldn't find a NVA stamp on the straps of the spade's carrying device for attaching it to the belt, but I did find a stamp from the MdI (Ministry of the Interior), which unfortunately is no longer legible. ...

is the case stamped MdI 1/69?
It's fitting at the time. It might have been for the police or Kampfgruppen der Arbeiterklasse.

Here, for example, is a case of this type with the NVA stamp and code from the 3rd Quarter 1973.
This is the time frame in which these black cases were manufactured from the late 1960s to the 1970s. So they are rather late cases.
