Grenztruppen Unteroffizer Walking out/service uniform.

Article about: Hello, good people of the War Relics Forum! This is my first real post. After my trip to Germany, I picked up a Grenztruppen service tunic, with Unteroffizer shoulder boards. I would like to

Yes, I indeed found a tie on German eBay. Also, while removing the old shoulder boards, I found something most curious. Instead of a regular old NVA style two holes for the string, there is a metal piece (picture below) that the loops on the shoulder board buttons attach to. This makes it certainly much easier to put them on, but I haven't found anything researching them. The tunic is from around 1970. Any thoughts on it?

It's the same on both shoulders.

Probably something fitted by the seller just to hold the board and button in place. I have several tunics, and none of them have this kind of arrangement.

    Cheers,

Yep I agree that this is not a standard uniform item and squaddies are the same the world over in that they will often add labour saving fixes to their gear.

However I think I have seen such a thing before and that it is from an old fashioned paper/card file cover. At a time when in the West we were using AC DELCO Acco clips to hold documents in place (I was amazed you can still buy these!!)

In the DDR they used an arrangement of cords or laces that were attached to the filie cover and passed though the punch holes of the cover and documents to be pulled tight and held under tension by shaped sprung rings like this. I imagine the shoulder board laces are secured in exactly the same way.

Just need to find a picture of what I am rabbiting on about now, but I am pretty sure that's what this is

    Regards

Hello, it's me again. As I have been researching my uniform more and more, I have come across Ärmelpatten. For a Leutnant's uniform, how many would be in order for the sleeves? Thanks!

Two on each sleeve ie four per jacket.

I'm back, with another question about another thing I have yet to find online. Would a shooting lanyard be acceptable with an Officer's Walking Out uniform? Thanks!

I'm not sure, but I'd be more inclined to leave it to enlisted.

No the Schutzenschnur is only for; Soldaten, Unteroffiziere, Fahnriche and Offizierschuler and is not worn by Offiziere ie Unterleutnant upwards.

I think this is fairly standard practice in most armies. Certainly in the British Army for example officers do not wear any kind of "special to arm" qualification, trade or other specialist badge with the exception of such things as parachute or aircrew wings.

The short answer to your question is "No".

    I hope this helps
