Re: Grey visor cap Real or Fake?
One of the easiest ways to "tell" a DDR cap is the lack of piping on the bottom. Most are piped on the crown and top of the band only. The ones with the heat-transfer (not sewn) sweatdiamonds are the most common, and date from about 1985 on. (prior to that they used celluloid).
They are always date coded--the letter means a specific year of production.
NVA visors from the period 1956-59 are the rarest, and most valuable. They used a tri-color cockade, and waffenfarbe, and the insignia was all-bullion for officers. They are almost of the quality of the TR ones, and are heavily padded.
The ones from 1960 to about 1965 used bullion wreaths, but with the DDR cockade in metal in lieu of the tri-color.

Do you have any NVA caps from 1956-9? Please show us.
Such objects would be much more rare than Wehrmacht Heer caps, surely.
The final species of NVA cap from the 1980s is not an especially impressive object from the standpoint of handmade or early machine made headwear, surely. Keine deutsche Wertarbeit.
I collected a lot of NVA thingies at the time in 1989-1990 and still have them wrapped in large plastic bags. The fun part was when the NVA people would sell their uniforms in front of the Brandenburg gate, as in the black market in the era of Harry Lime and the 3d Man.
Happy head wear.
