    Hi All,

Picked this up today to add to my Cold War display.

An early NVA Airforce officers Ushanka. A very small size 53.
It's always interesting to see how close the NVA insignia followed on from Wartime Germany.

    I hope you all enjoy,
    Matt

Much of the DDR uniform and insignia did resemble the TR equivalents but my feeling is that this had more to do with promoting the German military image and national identity than the TR itself. Look further back to WWI for clarity. After the war the East Germans did initially use some old wartime stock as well for economical reasons. As for the imagery their ethos was "we are the real true Germans, those in the west are American puppets" ( they had that spectacularly wrong, but that's politics) whilst in the GFR there was a concerted effort to avoid anything that resembled the TR or was even militaristic in any way. Many of the Bundeswehr formal or dress uniform have tended to look like lounge suits with badges because of this.

As for the Ushanka (Russian word, German would originally have been Pelzmuetze) I picked up a selection of these both DDR and Soviet from the different arms of service. I must dig them out for a family photo

    Regards

    Mark

    Hello,
Something funny about this type of headgear off topic...
Official name = winter fur hat (Winterfellmütze)
In the troops she was unofficially
    called “Bear Cunt”.
    Sorry....

Just like in the Austrian Bundesheer, where they called them "Bärenfut"

I don't know whether this hat is still part of the equipment and uniforms in the ÖBH these days...
