    They are that large to assist in the canopy breaking.

    Sitting in a cockpit you do not have the same leverage if you were standing or had room to move your arms.
    It needs to be that hefty to break the canopy.

    Meanwhile I was told, the rescue knife isn´t NVA/GDR, it´s Soviet.

    Have you tried looking at Soviet fighter cockpit photo's to see if you see it mounted?

    I have been going through every cockpit photo I can for the A4,
    No Luck, But being a knife guy, I have played with this knife while working on Avionics gear in the A4 cockpit.

    Interesting that it seems to be an international design for those times. Doesn't need to be anything special and was not a military secret.
