There's no denying it's a nice badge Mickey and as I said, no right or wrong answers to this one. Every opinion is valid and beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say so what one person thinks is the best design might differ from the next person!

To be blunt, you earned this award by being dead. Hence the commonly used name the Order of the Dead. It's real name is the Deutscher Ordern or simply the German Order. It is a very very rare award, arguably THE rarest and certainly the most spectacular.
You can read more about it here: Deutscher Ordern.
Tsk, Tsk, Adrian....Two men who received this award were still alive at war's end..head of the RAD Konstantin Hierl and the eccentric HJ leader Artur Axmann... William

That Order of the Dead is certainly impressive but with only 11 being awarded and who knows how many still surviving today I don't think it's an award I will have in my collection anytime soon

I have to second the earlier suggestion of the Ost Medalle, I believe it was also designed by a young German soldier? I've always liked the Helmet/grenade combo at the top, well done! On a related topic, since I started this hobby as a WW1 guy, I've always wondered why the 1939 Iron Cross left off the oak sprig. I think the substitution of a swastika for a Kings initial is fitting, but why subtract the Oak sprig? Very earthy, and well, traditional on Iron Crosses, and therefore a miss-step IMHO.
