    The damaged hook might put off some people, but it doesn't affect the appearance of the obverse. Is that a maker's mark on the pin?

    It does look like a maker mark to me but I can't read it as the pictures are not good enough.
    The hardware/setup seems to match ST&L so the mark should be either 4 or L/16.

    To me the damage to the catch would tend to lower the value (it's zinc and any attepmt to bend it back will just snap it) but in the context of the overall condition the difference would likely be proportionate.

    As for originality I wouldn't commit 100% without better pictures.

    It is a 4 on the pin, for St.&L.
    Unfortunately, the same thing has happened with most of these zinc awards, the finish gets absorbed with time.
    This one may have been "pulled" from a tunic, causing the damage to the catch.

    Thanks Ralph, as I said, I couldn't be sure but figured that what I could see was either the back edge of the 4 or the oblique stroke of an LDO number
