You are absolutely right. I rarely buy badges or awards at shows or any environment where a quick decision is necessary. I buy them more often over the internet whereby I have more time to make a decision. I consult my reference books and other examples in my collection and sometimes email the photos to a trusted collector friend for a second opinion. Then, if the badge/medal/award checks out, I pull the trigger and purchase it.

I got burned on a handful of badges and awards that I purchased in the 1990's. That was before we had the resources we have today like forums, much better reference books, etc. Therefore, I now utilize the much better authentication tools that we have now.
