That says it all really imo Adrian!

I seem to remember that I read on WAF a good while back that some of these Luftwaffe Panzerkampf Abzeichen's were awarded after their institution in November 1944 in extremely small numbers, (Apparently the almost mythical, and as yet unseen Luftwaffe close combat clasp was instituted the same day...).

There are believers for the Luftwaffw Panzerkampf Abzeichen though, Detlev Niemann sold the one below for mega bucks a few years back, and I recall Bob Hritz stating his belief in their production too.

Are these the badges that are supposed to be the prototypes or the awarded pieces Ned?

Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....

Hard to say mate. All that can be said with certainty is that this badge was authorised in late 1944, that some awards appear on paper, that no photos of the badge in wear have so far been found and that older and very experienced collectors (at least in the U.S.) have reported obtaining these badges from vets, albeit in extremely small numbers. I believe that the one in the pic above was obtained from a very early collection that pre dates the influx of known fakes that started to appear in the 60's-70's and ever since.

That's all I can add really, but I guess that there is an argument either way for the existence or not, of this type of badge, so it's a bit of a conundrum....

    Hello there,

I believe the badge that started this thread is stamped L/58 on the reverse (faintly) and obviously we all know Souval produced these badges post war.
