I have a couple of broken ones from Stalingrad and Estonia , there is a story based on the photo of Winkler that the Stalingrad Landser deliberately broke them to show they had fought there and how tough the fighting was , it is of course rubbish !

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader
House Carles at the Battle of Hastings
According to Jason Mark, the great Stalingrad historian, in the book "Island of Fire" he says referencing this picture of Winkler, "A man wearing a broken badge could be recognized as someone who fought out of a sense of duty but was still combat ready, thus a genuine, trustworthy guy, despite his opinion that the war was lost. Because the troops were not allowed to openly express this, they were able to make their feelings known in this way". Winkler died in a POW camp. The picture appeared in numerous magazines and his sons cut out the picture and wrote "our dear dad in Stalingrad in October 1942" on the back. And by the way "Island of Fire" is a must read. One book that I have read more then once. Great book by a great historian.
It is indeed an excellent book , as are all the ones by Jason !

thank you so much for sharing the IAB, with us. where did you obtain it?
No, both are silver grade. The hollow Deumer has a nicotine color due to age.
In looking at the reverse, the hinge plate still exhibits the silver finish.
Best Regards, fischer
thank, you.
so there is a niche for the broken IAB'S? a combat badge that is collectable being broken. were any other badges worn in combat with damage/ broken? just courious?
