    Hi,

Just got back from my first trip to Berlin, whilst there I picked up a few Russian medals including an Order of the Red star no 1439079.

Can anyone help me with the year of issue and how I can conduct further research.

    many thanks in advance

It was produced in October 1945 in the Moscow Mint and probably awarded in the spring of that year.

No, spring 1945. It was awarded before it was produced. Almost two million Red Stars were awarded in 1945, and production simply couldn't keep up I guess. That's why the Platinapribor Factory was ordered to start producing Red Stars; there simply was too much work for the Moscow Mint, that was since December 1942 the only facility producing Red Stars.

As a footnote I have to add though that there are contradicting sources as to when the batch of Red Stars that included s/n 1439079 was produced. The new book by Strekalov and Durov states that Red Stars 1023601-1792000 were produced in October 1945, the first postwar batch. But there are other sources that say that this batch was produced in two parts, in February and March 1945, with the first postwar batch starting with s/n 1835001.

I hope I made myself clear and am not boring you all too much with technical details
