Hi, just showing a new addition to the collection, an unissued tropical tunic of the Third pattern type, dated 1944 - so perhaps intended for such as Italy, Greece or the Mediterranean islands that were of course still occupied until the very end of the war.

It has simplified sizing stamps that I've observed in a small number of Heer M43 tunics and no visible RB number, unless the stamping was poor and it is simply not possible to see it. There is a purple line below the size stamps that may have been all that can be seen of the box around a mis-stamped RB number.

I will add the vendor pictures first (they are better than mine), and then some of my own afterwards.

I picked this up from Lux Militaria. They were good to deal with throughout.

    Regards, Paul

Some pictures of my own. I don't have any tropical shoulder straps for it but my main tropical interest is the Italian Campaign where looking at period pictures it's evident that the use of continental (i.e wool) shoulder-straps (and leather belts) was widespread.

Here seen with a slightly tan coloured "Mutzenfabrik Dressen F42" M40 tropical cap. This cap is a soutache removed (Artillery) cap with small traces of the soutache in the join between the body of the cap and the peak, hence Artillery shoulder straps seemed as good a choice as any...

Some more pictures of the cap here:-

Now shown with a Weissbach E41 (also Artillery soutache removed) M40 tropical cap. The colour and wear match is a lot closer for this cap.

Some more pictures of this cap here:-

Also some pictures from Stefano Di Giusto's excellent and highly detailed book covering Panzer-Abteilung 208 and it's service in Italy in 1943 and 1944.

Interestingly there are pictures as late as October 1944 showing tropical kit being worn by this unit. The use of continental shoulder-straps and leather belts seems more common than the tropical equivalents in this particular unit, whether due to supply issues, or preference, we will never know...

Tunics seem to be worn very sparingly in the pictures, perhaps even when issued they may have stayed in relatively good condition!

For interest, some pictures from the now out of print book "Deutsche Truppen in Italien" showing mixed tropical uniforms worn in Italy. None of the subjects shown wear tropical shoulder straps or tropical belts (except perhaps the first, though he is wearing a leather belt). Of course they were worn, these pictures merely illustrate when they were not.

Note the post July 1942 non-soutache caps (removed or manufactured without), the Unteroffizier's without collar tress (perhaps recently promoted), and the 'Ostfront' ribbons on three of them.

Finally, some (fully credited) pictures from the excellent Virtual Grenadier website:-

showing tunics sold in the past with the same simplified size stamps, i.e height range, chest size, two further sizes (one perhaps sleeve length?) and the date of manufacture.

    Thanks Todd!

Yes, I've shown it in the 'other place', but wanted to show it here too.

Used to collect DAK in earlier times but have tended towards the 1943-45 period in more recent years, particularly the Eastern Front, and Italy. Of course tropical uniforms were also worn on the Eastern Front including in the short-lived Kuban campaign which began and ended all inside 1943!

    Best regards, Paul
