Like the Voss double etch, I would not want an unmarked no maker name Damascus dagger. Provenance is difficult if not impossible to provide. Reason being smithies who made these had no source of income post war so they produced them post war to sell as souvenir items. Anyone versed on the Damascus process can make these, then mate them to original fittings. To give you an idea how prolific it is, here is a list of companies producing these in Pakistan today:

Thanks a lot Rich that was great info and that is a lot of Damascus makers. Sure does surprise me how many of the big name dealers sell the unmarked daggers. I definitely think I will steer clear of them in the future. I only have one unmarked, this luft but it was expensive enough.

Tim, do a key word search 'Pakastani produced SS Honor Daggers' or 'Pakastani produced German Army Daggers'. Anyone who has a fist full of dollars can get what ever they want made so buying these things from dealers with no names is a crap shoot with odds against you getting an original era made Damascus dagger.

Don't be surprised because money corrupts so many people and a the hungry 'I want' people loose sight of what they should be looking for while some dealers keep the focus on getting your dollars any way they can. When this stuff became big ticket dollar items it became a gold rush for fraudsters.

I would be suspicious of any unmarked Damascus blade. It was possible to buy an "imitation Damascus" blade during the TR era, and in fact some collectors may not be aware their blade is not genuine Damascus. But it was cheaper for buyers to go for the imitation option and most people wouldn't know the difference. Genuine Damascus blades probably only were fitted to special orders, presentation daggers or sword. There was actually only six sword smiths in Solingen in 1938 who were qualified to produce a Damascus blade. So they were a very expensive option. As it was the ultimate advertisement for the company, you can be sure it would be maker marked.
