These images were taken at a recent exhibition in Prague addressing forced labour during the National Socialist era. The photographs show concentration camp inmates at KZ-Mittelbau-Dora working on the manufacturing process of V2/A4 rockets and the expansion of one of the tunnel projects located within the mountains.

From time to time, the question is asked "is the correct name Mittelbau...Dora...Nordhausen...or Mittelbau-Dora...?"

To clarify, "DORA" was the name of the camp when it was established as a satellite of KZ-Buchenwald - during the period late August 1943 to late October 1944

From 28th October 1944 onward, the camp became an independant Konzentrationslager, no longer directly under the administration of KZ-Buchenwald. Thus, from this time, the camp (with its own system of approximately forty sub-camps) was to be known as KZ-Mittelbau. In March 1944, the Junkers Company coined the term Mittelbau and initially denoted the relocation of aircraft manufacturing facilities to these parts in the centre of Germany, hence "Mitte"

The underground tunnel facilities were referred to as the Mittelwerk - after the Reich owned limited liability company founded to manage the facility located within Mt.Kohnstein

Concentration camp Mittelbau / Mittelbau-Dora, should not be referred to as Concentration Camp Nordhausen, despite its proximity to the Thuringian city located in the southern Harz Mountain range.

This view, taken on our recent KZ tour, shows the Aschegrab (Ash Grave) located behind the Krematorium building. Initially, during the period when the camp was a satellite of Buchenwald and named DORA, the bodies of the dead were transported back to the Stammlager (Main Camp). Later, during 1944, the camp had its own crematorium established, behind which the ashes were dumped. The mass grave was landscaped in 2013.

74 years on...today marks the anniversary of the liberation of KL-Mittelbau-Dora.

    Liberation

By early April 1945, the majority of the Mittelbau camps had been vacated. The SS left several hundred sick and dying inmates behind in the Mittelbau-Dora camp and the satellite camp in Nordhausen known as Boelcke. They were liberated on 11th April 1945 when American troops reached Nordhausen.

On the days that followed, American war correspondents took photos and films of the enfeebled and starving inmates in Dora and the Boelcke casern – images that soon went around the world and are today among the most well-known testimonies to the Nazi crimes.

For the most part, the survivors of the clearance transports and death marches were liberated in KL-Bergen-Belsen and in other camps during mid April 1945. However, some had to wait until early May for their freedom.

From the summer of 1943 until spring 1945, some 60,000 people were incarcerated within the Mittelbau-Dora camp system. Conservative estimates assume a minimum of 20,000 died there.
