Inspired by Michael Ryan's thread, I thought I'd post this Bundesarchiv photo from 1939. The man in the dark jacket has what appears to be a Hirschfanger - or is it something else ?.
Any thoughts welcome.

Hi Richie it looks close..but still not sure of it. I put out an alert on the K98 forum for those guys to come over and take a peek at this thread. Regards Larry

Agree with Larry there was a pre WW1 hunting piece that was a bayonet type piece would have to look in the Klaus Lube book as he shows one in there. timothy
Larry, A very interesting photo it looks like some kind of Hirschfanger to me as well. Not particularly a uniform specialist myself, the individual in the dark jacket may be someone from the Customs or Grenzschutz (border guards)? With besides his gas mask, also carrying what seems to be an older WW I era Mauser short rifle (Karabiner 98a). With that said, to me it also looks like it may be a period staged/propaganda photo, so I'm a little cautious about accepting it as a typical actual "in use" photo. Best Regards, Fred
Hello,
this is a old style Grenzjäger Seitengewehr or Hirschfänger... for customers and border control.
The used rifle is also a very old model.

Thanks Sleepwalker - I've been wondering about it for a while !
