Hmmm...I don't think I've ever seen a period pic of an early black cap without a chinstrap (excepting those with a cloth covered visor). Its a well put together cap, for sure, but I still don't like the finish on the visor. My main area of collecting is now pickelhauben, so I spend a lot of time looking at lacquered leather!

Well here you go from another thread on here from 2008 about ss crushers, an enlisted/nco Allg crusher with no chincord in wear in 1938.

The one above worn by the RFSS is devoid of a chin strap, but I'm pretty sure its a grey crusher, not black! I've still not seen an early black cap (other than cloth visored) that didn't employ a chin strap...
