Dear Sir, I do this for a living. I will find other things for you. The second piece is good picture research over and above the nice things you already have in order to make the thing balanced. I should have you fix some of my hats, and you could buy more books with the proceeds. The Rest book is the point of departure, as are its other pre 1918 companion volumes also in English. But they are costly, and they are often too much in heft for some people.
There are several biographies of Seeckt in German, especially that of Hans Meier Welcker. You can also read the chapter in Paret, Makers of Modern Strategy, Princeton UP 1986 by Michael Geyer on the Reichswehr and Wehrmacht which is quite good.
This site manifests an openness to thinking, and books remain a foundation of such an activity.

    Hi,

This evenings addition to the thread involves some choice pictures from a most fortunate of find (for me at any rate) as will become clear later. First some fabulous cap pictures courtesy of the most thoughtful soldier who has carefully recorded his time in the army during the late 1920's for posterity. I hope I can do his pictures justice.

The officers were duly recorded whilst out and about in the barracks looking at the backgrounds in the pics. They all sport the post 1927 regulation service caps and the officer on the far left and bottom picture have the embroidered wreath and cockade attached to the cap band. The officer on the right is administrative official looking at his collar tabs. Please note that the cap cord would be made of "German silver" rather than the aluminium type and on early versions were quite "thin" looking.

Two more nice shots of the officers in the battalion and the gentleman on the right is der spiess, or the company mother as they were effectionatley known.....don't be fooled by his title that book sticking out the front of his tunic was for writing down the names of those unfortunate soldiers who he found fault with during his duty ! He has a very nice private purchase cap by the look of things.

This page of the album offers the money shot in terms of cap watching, two of the Nco's, note the piston rings on the tunic of the spiess, wear the service cap and one the 1919 field cap. The men wear the 1917 field cap carryed over into the reichswehr for other ranks wear. The men are having their rifles checked, the insides of their caps inspected (top right) and the soles of their boots inspected for good measure...........

So who are these guys ? Well the owner kindly left us his unit details on the front...........

Why is this such a result for me ? I have a cap in my collection and the inside stamps read like this..........

This man was in the 16/ III Btl.J.R 16 almost a perfect match for the album.

    Happy Hats

    cheers

Thanks for the album. This is the training btl. of Infantry Regiment 16 in Osnabrueck. I have owned several Karmann built cars from there.
    Wonderful album and marvelous images.

Reichswehr Caps 1919 -1934Reichswehr Caps 1919 -1934Reichswehr Caps 1919 -1934You also need these, which are the rank lists for the army in the Weimar period. There were those for the navy, too.
Such will help you to identify people, or at least do better than relying just on the internet.

This issue is another reason to take the Ryanair flight to Ingolstadt and join forces with the persons there.

Thanks for the info FB. The album is most pleasing and shows daily life in the barracks. Being the 16th Kompanie they were the heavy weapons company and there is a nice sequence of photos of them target shooting with the light MG.

    Guys,

Here is one of a slightly different nature from the early 20's. I do like the humour contained within but as the picture below shows they also did serious !

    1919 Provisional Reichswehr Insignia:

    Hi

A couple of photos to highlight the insignia worn on the caps of the soldiers from early 1919 to sept 1919 when the reichsadler was adopted for wear on the cap band.

These two guys wear the old imperial field cap with new insignia. The wreath central cap band with the national cockade and the state cockade on the crown. The soldier sitting looks to have acquired the 1919 pattern tunic with field grey collar and new litzen whilst his mate still has the imperial tunic.

These pictures show the mix and match approach of the times with respect to uniform. The freikorps soldier has the Imperial cap and insignia for freikorps Haupt whilst the reichswehr soldier has the new insignia on an imperial tunic.

This veteran of WW1 and a member of freikorps von Epp has it all. A 1919 pattern tunic and cap with all the correct new insignia. A proud looking soldier !

Here is the insignia in colour...... officers on the left, nco on the right.
