Anyone with a gun collection should always have an oil-impregnated cloth close to hand. It takes moments to wipe a weapon down, and it can save it from a lot of potential surface damage through neglect.

Good advice. I frequently use a Remington oil cloth which contains Rem Oil and rust inhibitors to protect the metal on mine. So far so good. Cheap protection indeed.
Always “wipe” and leave an even coat. I’ve seen where folks have just sprayed it on and it leaves darker spray marks on the finish/bluing of some weapons. Also be careful with what you use. Some harsher solvents will ruin the patina on wood stocks.
