Default Help with 1915 Luger Identification

Just picked up my first Luger from the family of PFC Ralph Kiggins, and I would greatly appreciate any insights into the history and value. He was an Army medic and claims to have won it in a poker game. I cannot find the exact military proof marks anywhere. I've seen others with the same 2-4 characters but the 1st is always different.

Also curious what others think about the tape. I have a professional gunsmith who works on antiques, and he wants to leave it completely untouched except to remove the tape and replace the screw. Thoughts on his approach?

Interesting piece, certainly the tape should be probably removed, when its not period made from owner, most real the screw was lost and someone secured the left grip with this tape. You should look at front grip strap for german unit marking. The magazine a missmatch.

Thanks Andy. Plan to look for unit markings, but if they are there they are under the tape. Nothing visible at this time.

Then probably is nothing there, as the tape is not so wide, that would hide a complete unit stamp.
