Iraqi M80, our Most Recent Addition
This showed up on our doorstep yesterday, an Iraqi M80 helmet. These helmets date back to the Iran/Iraq war and were the Iraqi soldiers issued helmet up until the Gulf War, which was about the time Iraq started produced its own version, the M90.
The M80 helmets were purchased from South Korea and are made up of some type of compressed fiber which was almost void of any real ballistics protection. From the looks of these, they probably couldn’t protect a soldier from much more than an aerial bombardment by a flock of starving pigeons. Produced in the color green, most M80’s were repainted a desert tan color before being issued. Most examples you find today have significant paint loss, mostly on the crown, due to inferior painting process.
This shell looks to have been recently repainted, the scuffing, that shows, looks more the cause from being stacked with a bunch of other helmets. The inside of the shell does look as though it’s seen more than a warehouse shelf so maybe this helmet came back from the field and got a fresh coat of desert tan paint. The liner and nape strap look to be un-used. Maybe this was a fresh re-issue and the soldier wearing it, after seeing the line if Coalition Tanks coming his way, surrendered before he had a chance to break sweat!
Here are a few photos:
