Thanks so much for the response...I had just looked back at this yesterday hoping I had overlooked a post! You all have been so helpful, my sister and brother-in-law and myself, had no idea the sword had so much history to it. So the portapee belongs with a dagger of a "ranger"...what is a close example here in the US? When you say ranger, do you mean park ranger or Army Ranger? Or was this portapee part of the kit that a guy that grew and cut trees carried with him? All three come to mind for me so it is not clear. The internet has so far been unhelpful in my attempts to understand what a ranger is in Europe/Germany...

A “Förster” in German is a guy who looks after a forest, so a forester, forest ranger or forest warden.
