Hi William,
I don't recall seeing an original badge with a skull looking like that. There is also some very poor definition on the features, particularly around and between the snakes bodies and the area around the skull.
I wouldn't take the risk on it. Better to keep the money in your pocket than spend it and then try to get it back.
Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....
Hello William,
this is a hard call for me. It is supposed to be a semi hollow Juncker badge and it ticks a lot of the correct boxes for me. It has the twisted sword handle, the flaw near the hinge, the correct hinge and hook plate (see below about the hook) the 2 drilled holes BUT
Here are my concerns.
The lack of detail on the obverse. I don't see too many scales on the serpents but I can't understand what the powdery finish is..is it zinc pest? Will it brush off?
That grey paint finish on the back..I have seen it before on other badges, I think at least one of my Kriegsmarine badges has it but I cannot be sure without digging in to my boxes.
And lastly the bright coloured hook plate.
It is either a very good casting or genuine..without handling it and getting a feel that is the best I can do..
I would have it in my collection
All the best
Doug
Apologies Adrian I didn't know you had answered.
Below is a close up of a good Juncker skull and it is very similar (if not the same skull) as I mentioned before the serpent scale detail is one of my concerns

Fake!
Hi Doug,
The skulls are similar but I think there are differences in the shape of the eye sockets? The skull on the badge posted by William seems to 'pout' more too although this maybe an optical illusion caused by the lack of detail surrounding the teeth.

Good call.
Spotted what you mean Adrian.
So the assumption is then that this is a good cast copy of an original badge?
The originals of these in gold and bronze are the ones I need to complete my set.
I would still have this as a filler paying £20 rather than 2000 euros
It is a fake. Not only the finish is wrong. Some important fingerprints also missing.
Regards
Joachim
Hello Joachim,
please elaborate about the fingerprints as I am always happy to learn more about these elusive awards
MFG
Doug
