not a rare maker,,,i would clean it as best you can and then brush coat of clear lacquer on it,,,
You don't see too many of those! The main thing to do is prevent further deterioration so sealing it with an approved product would be my choice.
Why not post it down in the Restoration and Refurbishing section and let the guys there take a look?
