what soldier got the most of them? and how many, and where? thanks. be cause this guy posted has the MOTHER LOAD OF THEM.!! and he doesn't even have the DEUTSCHES KREUTZ IM GELD. why?
The bloke in the picture is Oberleutnant Gunther Viezenz and he is credited as the "top scorer" with 21 tanks destroyed. That would of course add up to four Gold and one Silver award but he appears to be wearing more than that total in the picture. He later served in the Bundeswehr retiring as an Oberstleutnant (Lt Col). I don't know for sure but I would expect all his awards were on the Ostfront.
The absence amongst his awards of the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold (DKiG) is not remarkable because although it ranked between the Eisernes Kreuz I (EKI) and the Ritterkreuz zum Eisernes Kreuz (RK) and a prerequisite was that the candidate should already hold the EKI the DKiG was separate from the series of succession of the EK.
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing he cares more about than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature with no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
